A sinus issue can leave anyone miserable. If you can’t get an appointment with your doctor right away, however, don’t despair — there are a number of excellent sinus medications available over-the-counter at your local pharmacy. Here are four of the best medications available.

1. Decongestants

One of the most common issues people experience with their sinuses is swelling and congestion. Decongestants are medications, usually taken orally, which are designed to reduce inflammation and swelling in your nose. Sudafed is a common decongestant. These can treat the symptoms of a sinus infection but cannot treat the infection itself.

2. Nasal Sprays

Nasal steroid sprays such as Rhinocort and Nasonex can be sprayed directly into your nasal passages, countering the inflammation that is leading to mucus and discomfort.

While these sprays do need to be used carefully and in accordance with their directions, they’re often a fast way to get relief. There are a number of different brands depending on how quickly you need relief, and whether you need a drowsy or non-drowsy formula.

3. Mucolytics

These medications specifically target mucus. If you’re having issues with mucus and drainage, mucolytics can help. They will thin your mucus, making it easier for you to breathe, and alleviating some of the pain of the infection.

Mucinex is one of the most popular of these types of medications, but just like a decongestant, it can only treat the symptoms of an infection it does not cure it.

4. Pain Relievers

If you’re still experiencing pain from your sinus infection, over-the-counter pain relievers such as Advil or Nyquil can help. These pain relievers are going to make you more comfortable as you rest and recover.

Many doctors suggest alternating between different types of pain reliever to help prevent organ damage.

Of course, if your infection persists or becomes serious, you need to see a doctor. However, these medications can help you until you get an appointment.
